It is widely accepted in the security industry that smart cards are the best solution to solve the vulnerability of user authentication locally or remotely over networks and the Internet, but the associated simple PIN mechanism exposes smart cards to malicious attack if cards are lost.

However, complicated PINs cause their own inconvenience for most smart card users and difficult to remember PINs are frequently written down, another serious vulnerability.

Introducing biometric PKI with smart cards is not enough, the market is also demanding template portability for dedicated fingerprint applications and more secure ways to protect stored templates .

The current method of storing templates in databases provides huge opportunities from malicious attack or manipulation and if templates are stored locally rather than on a central server there is lack of portability.

• BioSC - Lock that requires fingerprint authentication of the user to boot the system, to logon to applications and to access encrypted files.
